By employees' own estimates, resolving each incident of unchecked AI content takes about two hours on average. Either way, the researchers calculated an "invisible tax" from this number: roughly $186 per month per employee, or over $9 million a year for a 10,000-person company.
In January 2026, Workday published a separate study, Beyond Productivity: Measuring the Real Value of AI, based on a survey of 3,200 employees (Workday Newsroom). Their findings: about 37% of the time saved through AI gets eaten up by rework. For every 10 hours saved, nearly 4 go into correcting errors, verifying outputs, and rewriting AI-generated content. Only 14% of employees consistently get a net positive result from AI.
But financial losses are only half the story.
